​Public Works Maintenance 1
 
The mission of the Public Works Department is to operate, maintain and plan for city infrastructure and provide essential services for residents and businesses of the city. Public Works also meets customer needs with professionalism in a cost-effective manner. Public Works builds, manages and protects the City’s largest asset, public infrastructure, use and enjoyment of the Haines community.

Position Description

Essential Duties:


The City of Haines is seeking a qualified applicant to fill a full time Public Works Maintenance 1 position.

​Major duties require at least 1 year experience being able to plan and direct activities related to water and waste water utilities and infrastructure; including taking monthly water meter readings, repair, clean, replace and test water meters, repair or install water and sewer lines, valves, fire hydrants, well pumps, water reservoirs, irrigation pivots and crop irrigation. General cleanup of city parks, roads, rights-of-way, and borrow pits. Grade unimproved streets, surface repair to improved streets, maintain open ditch drainage systems and place, maintain and replace street signage.  Open and cover the Haines Sanitary Landfill when necessary. Also, operate and maintain all City equipment; including Backhoe, Grader, Lawn mower, Tractor with implements, Dump truck and other machinery and construction equipment as necessary. Must be able to be on call for emergencies and respond to the city shops within 1 hour of call (except when on paid vacation).
Meet and collaborate with local, state and federal officials on projects and regulations.
Develop reports and specifications for projects; assist in negotiating and awarding of contracts; assure inspection of construction projects for design and other requirements and prepare and submit required reports.
Meet and make presentations to the public when necessary and to the City Council monthly or as requested. 

Preferred Candidate Ideals

The best candidate will be a seasoned professional with experience in Public Works, water and waste water utility systems. Budget management and capital planning, and be able to streamline operations while controlling costs and delivering high-quality service to our citizens.
The best candidate should possess visionary leadership and display excellent managerial ability, strategic planning and decision-making skills. Strong relationship-building skills with the city management team, City Council and throughout the city is essential.
The Public Works Maintenance 1 must have effective communication, strong collaboration, negotiation and team-building skills to be successful. Proficient written and oral communication skills are essential.
The Ideal candidate must be effective at community engagement and follow through and be a good listener. Will possess good organizational skills with a transparent style of leadership, able to interact, resolve issues and diffuse difficult citizen inquiries. A supportive leader who creates an environment where team collaboration is valued, that ensures accountability and continued growth is expected.


Qualifications


Qualified candidates must be a minimum of 18 years of age, have at least a high school diploma or equivalent and possess at least 1 year of reasonable experience. The candidate should have or must be able to obtain, within 3 years from the date of hire, Oregon OHS level 1 water distribution certification as well as Oregon DEQ level 1 waste water collection and treatment certification. Candidate should have or must be able to obtain a class B CDL license within one year from the date of hire. Must live within 1 hour response to the city shops.

Salary range is based on experience and current water and sewer certifications up to $4,853 per month.
